Here’s The Low Down On All Things Tallow...
Why Tallow?
We make skincare the old-fashioned way — with whole ingredients, simple formulas, and methods that actually respect the skin. No fillers, no noise, no complicated routines. Just products that support your barrier and fit into real life.
Our tallow comes from 100% Alberta grass-fed suet and is purified using a slow wet-render method (salt + distilled water). This removes impurities and naturally deodorizes the fat, leaving behind a clean, neutral tallow that absorbs beautifully into the skin.
If your skin is dry, reactive, or overwhelmed, tallow brings it back to basics with nourishing lipids and gentle, barrier-supporting ingredients.
Does it smell like beef?
Short answer: no — not with the way we make it.
The “beefy” smell comes from rushed or poorly cleaned rendering. We use a traditional, slow wet-render method that pulls impurities away from the fat. We repeat this process until the tallow becomes clean, creamy, and neutral.
Our double-rendered tallow has a soft, mild aroma — never meaty or pungent.
Why does tallow work so well for skin?
Instead of repeating the old “mimics human sebum” line, here’s what actually matters:
Tallow is rich in skin-structured lipids like palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids — the same types of fatty acids your skin relies on for softness and barrier strength. These lipids help replenish moisture lost from overwashing, weather, and dryness.
It also contains naturally occurring vitamins A, D, E, and K, delivered in a form the skin can work with.
This makes tallow:
- deeply nourishing without clogging
- calming for reactive or eczema-prone skin
- helpful for restoring the barrier
- slow to oxidize = gentle and stable
It’s simple biology, not hype.
Why is your tallow different?
1. We start with Alberta grass-fed suet — the good stuff.
Not all fat is created equal. Suet from healthy, grass-fed cattle gives us a naturally cleaner, richer, more nutrient-dense base. It’s the reason our tallow feels so smooth and absorbs beautifully into the skin.
2. We purify it the old-fashioned way.
Our slow, wet-render method (with salt + distilled water) gently pulls out impurities and naturally neutralizes any odor. No shortcuts. No masking scents. Just a clean, silky tallow that smells soft and neutral — never beefy — and feels luxurious on your skin.
3. Our “why” is personal.
Tippy wasn’t created in a lab or a boardroom — it was born out of necessity. We built these formulas because we needed them in our own home as parents: simple ingredients we could trust on sensitive skin, products that didn’t make things worse, and skincare that actually supported our kids through real-life skin struggles.
We don’t make tallow because it’s trendy.
We make it because it’s what worked for our family first.
Do your products need special storage?
Not really. Our tallow products are shelf-stable for up to 12 months at room temperature.
Because tallow responds to temperature:
- it may firm up in cold weather
- and soften in warmer months
This is completely normal.
We add a small amount of vitamin E for natural preservation, but please keep water out of the jar and use clean, dry hands during application. Moisture is the only thing that can shorten shelf life.
Is tallow safe for babies?
Yes — our unscented tallow (like Naakid and Calf Cream) is gentle enough for babies and commonly used for:
- dry patches
- eczema-prone skin
- chapped cheeks
- post-bath moisture
- winter irritation
As always, patch-test on delicate skin, but tallow has been used on babies for generations.
Why are your formulas so simple?
Because simple works. So why add more than is necessary?
Fewer ingredients = fewer irritants + fewer chances for your skin to react.
We believe skincare should feel easy: one jar that works for the whole family, morning or night. No overwhelm, no steps you’ll never realistically do. Just nourishing, old-world ingredients that support the skin.
Where do you source your tallow?
All our tallow comes from Alberta grass-fed beef — local, ethical, and traceable. We use suet (the highest-quality fat) because it produces a cleaner, purer, more consistent final product.
